Wash-CAP: MAKING THEATERS MORE ACCESSIBLE FOR YOU
Live theater in Seattle, Washington, will never be the same thanks to the Washington Communications Access Project (frequently abbreviated to Wash-CAP).
The Washington State Communication Access Project is a membership organization that takes a strategic approach to assessing statewide accommodations for people with hearing loss and is focusing on captioning in particular. In 2008, it worked with live theaters to provide captioned performances. For example, Seattle's Paramount Theatre agreed to open-caption one performance each of its entire lineup of Broadway shows. Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre agreed to offer captioned performances beginning in the 2009-2010 season. Wash-CAP is continuing its advocacy with the Washington State Ferries to caption announcements.
And that's not all. Wash-CAP is also working on movie theater, stadium, and arena captioning. Its strategic plan calls for future advocacy for captioning in public and government facilities, including the courts.
The Hearing Loss Association of Washington (HLA-WA) has endorsed Wash-CAP, and several HLA-WA board members are also board members of Wash-CAP.
